Time Truck takes archaeology to Northampton High School

Ashley Almeida, Time Truck Education Officer highlights a recent trip to Northampton High School with the Time Truck to talk archaeology and heritage.

As part of a packed month of engagement, the Time Truck visited Northampton High School in June to work with local primary schools.

Over 3 days, Esther Poulus and I worked with several primary schools and carried out 2 of our most popular school workshops: Health & Diet and Skeleton Stories. Health and diet gives children a chance to understand a little of environmental archaeology and its importance to learning about individuals in the past, whilst Skeleton Stories, which was devised by one of our Senior Osteologists Michael Henderson, allows children to learn the basics of osteology; albeit in a slightly more pared down fashion!

Throughout the week we were aided by some of the older students from Northampton High School who kindly helped us to welcome students to the Time Truck and shared some of the things they had learned from a visit to the MOLA offices the previous week.

During their visit to MOLA, the students took part in a range of activities including animal bone identification devised by Sander Aerts, looking at metal x-rays through light boxes as well as some finds processing as well. Both the teachers and students spoke enthusiastically of their trip and how much they got to see and do whilst there.

We thoroughly enjoyed taking the Time Truck to Northampton and we're looking forward to preparing our next visit for later this year.

If you think you or your organisation would like to support this work, or if you’d like to discuss a visit to your school, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch by emailing timetruck@mola.org.uk, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
