Community Archaeology

We run a range of community and public archaeology programmes. Our aim is to stimulate enquiry and promote active discovery through partnership and participation, widening access to and appreciation of our heritage.

Our projects offer people the opportunity to acquire new life skills and to discover, care for and experience heritage first-hand. Our community archaeologists work with our clients and other partners to design and deliver local projects, including community digs, practical workshops, training sessions, and walks and talks. We engage audiences through digital channels, including blogs and social media and through our community archaeology initiatives we engage with a wide audience, from school children to local groups.

We host the award-winning Thames Discovery Programme, which has trained close to 500 volunteers in recording and monitoring the archaeology of the Thames foreshore. The CITiZAN (Coastal and Intertidal Zone Archaeology Network) project is one of the country's largest citizen science projects, working with a network of volunteers to survey and celebrate the fragile heritage of England’s coast and of the foreshores of its tidal estuaries.
