Researching MOLA Material

MOLA holds a significant collection of archaeological material. This diverse collection includes human remains, zooarchaeological and environmental collections, spatial data, and ceramic and finds assemblages, we grant independent researchers access to this material for their studies.

If you would like to draw on our collection for an independent research project (not in collaboration with MOLA) then please complete the Research Request Application Form (download). Partially completed forms will be returned unread. Before doing so, we ask that you browse the list of Previous and Ongoing Research studies that have been conducted using our collections. Please make sure you have also read and understand the conditions of access.

Researchers conducting independent research are required to pay a bench fee. In return you will receive access to a desk and computer, as required from 9.30am–4.30pm, on agreed days, and to dedicated, subject appropriate, staff assistance. Fees can be paid by debit or credit card, cash or cheque.

1 day – £70
First week – £300
Subsequent weeks – £250

Fees do not apply to collaborative research or for projects for which initial application forms were received before October 2013. If you would like to discuss whether fees are applicable for your project, please contact us research@mola.org.uk.
