Hackney Town Hall

Time: 10:30am-6pm

Price: FREE

This Christmas we're bring Shakespeare to Shoreditch for a one day pop-up of festive family fun. The Time Truck will be at Hackney Town Hall and visitors can discover the secrets of the Curtain Theatre, one of Shakespeare’s least historically documented playhouses.

See artefacts discovered during the dig, many of which date back as far as the 16th century, as well as exclusive footage of the excavation process and site throughout the three-month excavation. Come and see money boxes once used at the theatre’s box office and bird whistles which could have been used for sound effects during performances of some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Our archaeologists who worked on the excavation will be on hand to tell visitors about these exciting discoveries and provide insights into life at the Curtain Theatre.

The Time Truck will also welcome Shoreditch’s Shakespeare company – The Malachites, and Shake-scene Shakespeare, the critically-acclaimed theatre company specialising in the unrehearsed cue-script technique, once used by the Bard himself. Both will treat visitors to scenes from one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated comedies, Twelfth Night –  a fitting play for the festive season!

This is a family-friendly event, and children will be invited to have a go at festive token making and will be able to take away their very own Shakespearean playhouse tokens to decorate their Christmas trees at home.

The event is sponsored by the consortium of investors behind The Stage, which is led by Cain International.
