During excavation for Crossrail, MOLA archaeologists have uncovered fourteen skeletons lying in carefully laid out rows on the edge of Charterhouse Square in Farringdon. The remains are believed to date to the late 1340s, thus leading experts believe that they may be Black Death victims.

Historic records reference a burial ground in the Farringdon area, opened during the Black Death of 1348. The limited written records suggest up to 50,000 individuals may have been buried in less than three years, in a hastily established cemetery.
