We are thrilled to announce that our Time Truck project has won The Sandford Award for Heritage Education 2018, an accolade normally only open to museums and historic houses.

Since it started in 2016/17 the Time Truck Schools Programme has delivered free, innovative archaeology workshops:

  • In over 40 schools
  • Reaching nearly 5000 8-11 year olds in its first year
  • And 7000 in its second year
  • Across 6 London boroughs: Hackney, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark, and Tower Hamlets

Workshop topics have reflected the range and depth of MOLA’s expertise, and have included sessions on everything from environmental archaeology and human osteology, to Elizabethan playhouses. The Sandford Award judges' report highlighted the unique ability of the Time Truck to bring practicing archaeology specialists directly to a schools audience. Lead Judge Donald Henderson said:

"The MOLA Time Truck is a bold adventure in bringing archaeology to schools, especially in outlying areas of Greater London, and benefiting children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to encounter archaeology […] Their activities offer children the thrill of handling genuine artefacts from the Roman period onwards[…] The Time Truck delivers a unique experience to pupils that engages and inspires, and yet is provided right outside their classroom."
