Join the Thames Discovery Programme on a guided walk on the Thames foreshore at Putney.

Guided by one of our expert archaeologists, discover the archaeology of this fascinating area of Thames foreshore. By uncovering forgotten histories, learn about:

  • the source of an Anglo-Saxon fish take away!
  • prehistoric settlements and activity in the area
  • Find out about the Putney debates at the end of the Civil War and find out why drains excite archaeologists!

Please be aware that this event involves walking across uneven and muddy ground.

The walk will begin at: 08:30, at top of the ramp in front of the Brewhouse Pub. (Find the location on What3Words or Google Maps)

Our guided foreshore walks help support our work to monitor and record the vulnerable archaeology on the Thames foreshore.

Important information

Our walks are extremely popular and usually sell out, please cancel your ticket as soon as possible if you’re not able to attend. Someone else may want your space. We’ll refund anyone who cancels their place up to 24 hours before the start of the event. NB Eventbrite's booking fee is non-refundable in most cases.

Make sure you know what to expect on our guided walks, especially if you haven't been to the foreshore before.

The foreshore surface can be uneven and muddy – please wear sturdy footwear, waterproof boots or wellies are recommended! Please don't wear open-toed footwear. In case of bad weather, the walks may be postponed or cancelled.

Please note: The ticket email includes the nearest postcode, but might not take you all the way to the meeting place. Google maps and other online maps can be confusing as they don’t recognise the names of the river stairs or foreshore features, and may send you to the wrong place. We suggest: get to the postcode or ideally use what3words, find the river, and you should find us nearby!

Artefacts on the foreshore

The Thames Discovery Programme leads regular guided walks on the foreshore for adults, and families with older children and teenagers. These walks focus on the history and heritage of the river including those structures and features exposed by the movement of sediment in this dynamic environment, which are monitored and archaeologically recorded by our Foreshore Recording and Observation Group (FROGs).

Thanks to the kind permission of the Port of London Authority, some surface-only artefact handling may be permitted when attending a TDP foreshore walk, but all finds must be examined by the archaeologist on site, and significant finds must be recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Please be aware that if you wish to search the foreshore for artefacts at other times you must be in possession of a Permit to Search the Foreshore, issued by the Port of London Authority.
