But nearby was a thriving riverside settlement where people were making leather, glass, and metal objects - everyday essentials that were beautiful as well as functional.
Excavations in the 1980s revealed the remains of a Roman warehouse, just a few hundred metres south of the site. And just over 150 metres east were the remains of high-status Roman accommodation including a very luxurious bathhouse. But Roman Southwark hadn’t given up all its secrets...
In 2021-22, nearby MOLA excavations close to Borough Market uncovered a series of incredible Roman mosaics, including the largest found in London for over 50 years. Some of these were once part of a mausoleum, a grand Roman tomb. Roman Southwark might have been on the outskirts of the capital, but the people buried here were some of the wealthiest in society.
