Archaeological Evaluation
Archaeological evaluation is a phase of initial field testing that provides information on the nature, extent and significance of archaeological remains present on a site. Archaeological evaluations are required either in support of planning applications or to fulfil planning conditions, to ascertain the scope of any further archaeological work that might be required in response to development.
Using a range of targeted techniques we investigate the level of archaeological survival on a site. Our results are dependable and our recommendations practical.
We offer expert advice on appropriate evaluation strategies and recommend targeted methods that are rapid but still ensure that enough information is recovered to allow clients and construction teams to accurately programme and budget for future work.
Our archaeological evaluation techniques embrace fieldwalking, geophysical survey, geoarchaeological boreholes, deposit modelling, trial trench excavation and excavation of test pits. We work with our clients’ appointed geotechnical engineers to combine their site investigation work and results with our evaluations, saving our clients time and money.
We report promptly, and where required we make realistic recommendations for subequent mitigation work. This allows our clients to progress with certainty, knowing the nature of the archaeology on site and any implications for their developments.
