I specialise in medieval and later ceramics, glass, and clay tobacco pipes. This involves assessment of finds, analysis and research, and writing and editing publications. I have wide experience of the pottery of the London area and have been involved in the establishment and maintenance of the MOLA Fabric Reference Collection. A particularly important part of my outlook is an holistic approach to finds research as a part of total site reporting and the use of material culture to inform our understanding of past lives.

I have been involved as author with the production of numerous major papers and books, including four parts of an extensive type-series of London Medieval Pottery and the first part of a series on the pottery of London c.1500–1700.

I have served as Co-Editor of Medieval Ceramics and as Joint Editor of Post-Medieval Archaeology. I was also President of the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology for three years and am currently Joint Editor of English Ceramic Circle Transactions. As a frequent speaker at conferences and to specialist groups, I have organised and led study days on numerous aspects of ceramics and taught an annual series of evening classes from 2001 to 2020.
