Bartmann Goes Global MAAST course
MOLA Academy of Specialist Training (MAAST) is back with a brand new 12-week course, and this time we’re looking at everything Bartmann...
This is a FREE in-person course based at our London office, Wednesday afternoons (2-4pm) from October 1st to December 17th.
Learn from our team of experts working on the international Bartmann Goes Global project, including Senior Pottery Specialist Jacqui Pearce and Ceramics Team Lead Nigel Jeffries, and get hands-on training with these iconic objects.
Over the 12-week period you’ll gain practical skills and experience in identifying fragments of Bartmann jugs found across London. In our specialist-led sessions and workshops, you’ll learn how to identify and record both fragments and complete jugs, including uncovering when and where they were made, and exploring how they arrived here and what they were used for. Over the course you’ll contribute your findings to the Bartmann project database, which is collecting examples of the jugs found across the world.
You’ll also have the chance to share your experiences on the course, for example writing blogs or contributing to social media posts.
This MAAST course is open to all age 18+. No previous experience is needed, just an interest in archaeology and history!
This is a free course funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) as part of ‘Bartmann Goes Global - the cultural impact of an iconic object in the early modern period’ a collaborative research project between the UK and Germany.
Places are limited, to apply please click here to complete an application form by Monday 15th September 2025. You will be informed by email if you have been accepted for the course by Wednesday 24th September.
